Abstract
The Electoral Reform Act of 2022 introduced unique extra-territorial regulation of political finance aimed at Sinn Féin. The legislation compels Irish parties to disclose the assets of all their subsidiaries wherever they are located. One of the rationales behind the legislation was to prevent Sinn Féin from regulatory arbitrage that would give allow it to out-compete others in Ireland subject to a €2,500 limit with money from the UK where donations are unlimited. However, Ireland’s generous public funding means that money is more likely to flow in the opposite direction. The first disclosures under the new rules were made in June 2025. They show that Sinn Féin is asset-rich compared to its competitors in Ireland, but not compared to parties in Spain, especially nationalist parties from the Basque region. This means the party is somewhat better financially insulated against poor election results than its competitors. The disclosures themselves also nudge the party towards a more open culture, where elected representatives and ordinary members are at less of a disadvantage in relation to the party organisation.
