Abstract
This entry explores the topic of imprinting in family firms. The imprinting perspective suggests that a firm’s current characteristics reflect its environment at conception and these characteristics persist despite subsequent environmental changes. Family firm scholars have applied and adapted the imprinting perspective to the family firm context, highlighting its usefulness in explaining how the distinct traits of these firms transcend generations. While this research demonstrates how some imprints can be retained over the entire history of a family firm, others may change, evolve, and transform across generations or get replaced by new imprints. Within this entry, we offer an overview of imprinting within the family firm context.
