Abstract
This chapter reflects on the viability and agency of waterways and their value to Irish culture and society. Nature-culture-innovation interfaces and the realisation of different types of agency are evoked to debate epistemic justice/injustice. The integration of water as commodity and life systems is a matter of national and international debate and tensions. Two theoretical ideas are discussed in relation to Irish waterways, deterritorialization and reciprocal capture. These ideas offer a materialist extension to how Irish society should use and value our waterways, influenced by our cultural and historical relationships with water balanced with our economic need for increased housing, industry and infrastructure. There are key stakeholders that should engage in conversation that are part of the discourse of nature. When and how do we ensure these conversations take place? Can these conversations be simulated and enabled in media and political debate?
