Abstract
This unit provides opportunities to reflect on what summative assessment is, how it is used in primary schools and the impact that it has on learners. The unit considers a range of questions about summative assessment in order to fully understand its purpose and how it can be effectively used in classrooms. Alongside discussing purposes of summative assessment, the unit also identifies sources of assessment evidence. Considerations are also given as to what counts as good evidence of learning. The unit also presents an overview of current policies on summative assessment and reporting procedures. Comparisons are also made with formative assessment. The unit concludes by inviting the views of readers on current assessment policy and practice.
