Abstract
This chapter reexamines the conventional relationship between creativity and constraints from a 4E perspective that casts cognition as a process extending across people and things. This perspective views the constraints of interacting with other people and matter not as a hindrance but as integral to the creative process. The authors challenge the prevailing hylomorphic model, which posits that creators can mould passive matter at will, suggesting instead that creativity is a dynamic interplay between an individual and their environment. This reconceptualisation of the binary between internal freedom and external constraints leads to the reconceptualization of constraints as neither catalysing nor hindering creativity but rather as a simple part of engaging in the creative act. By redefining constraints as essential elements rather than barriers, the chapter encourages a rethinking of how creative potential can be harnessed within the limitations of real-world conditions. This shift in how constraints are perceived within the creative landscape allows for a broader, more inclusive framework for understanding creativity. This framework not only acknowledges but embraces the socio-cultural embeddedness of creative practices, thereby enriching the discourse on creativity in contexts marked by intricate and often challenging constraints.
