This chapter proposes a view of societies as “societies of the possible” in the sense of communities that foster a plurality of positions and perspectives and are open to alternative futures. And yet, there are multiple forces also within society that strive toward imposing sameness and pre-determined futures. These forces are embodied, among others, by totalitarian regimes. But, in the same way, as totalitarianism invites resistance, the impossible is often met with laughter, wonder, and hope. Examples are offered from Romanian history and the argument is made that the ongoing struggle against the impossible is what keeps societies moving forward.
