Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of neophyte performance analysts working in a high-performance third-level Gaelic Games setting, involved in a mentoring programme. The primary purpose was to identify the effectiveness of mentoring in developing neophyte analysts, while the secondary purpose was to explore programme design. A qualitative research design was adopted. Mentees (n = 6), mentors (n = 4), and coaches (n = 6) engaged in focus groups, which were analysed using Reflexive Thematic Analysis. The results indicate that mentoring can be an effective development tool for analysts. Furthermore, the results provide information on a) the importance of dyad matching and training, b) the mentoring process, including engagement types and relationships developing, and c) the importance of coach interactions in analyst development. The findings have implications for the successful implementation of mentoring as a strategy for the development of neophyte analysts and include recommendations for a multiple mentor approach for development.
