Abstract
In this article we examine the research literature on primary science across this period and consider the successes and challenges apparent within the teaching and learning of primary science in Ireland. The paper considers possible future developments for science education, as a discrete discipline within STEM education, and, given the necessity of all citizens to be scientifically literate, considers how the re-envisioning of the primary curriculum presents huge opportunities to advance scientific literacy for all students in Ireland.
