Abstract
This article introduces Canúint.ie, a new digital atlas that makes major Irish-language sound collections searchable and mappable for researchers and the public. Building on earlier dialect atlases and on long-standing archival initiatives, the project hopes to bring together recordings and metadata from key twentieth-century collections (including the Irish Folklore Commission, the Doegen recordings, and later broadcast and community archives) and presents them through an interactive map interface. The article outlines the project’s workflow: locating and standardising legacy catalogue information, linking speakers and places to authoritative placename data, and aligning audio with time-stamped transcriptions so users can navigate recordings at word or phrase level. It also discusses the linguistic and editorial challenges of representing dialect speech in a consistent, usable way—especially orthographic variation, mixed-language passages, and the need to preserve local forms while enabling cross-collection search. A central emphasis is on collaborative improvement: the atlas is designed to support ongoing correction and enrichment of transcripts and metadata by specialists and community users, ensuring that the resource remains both academically robust and socially grounded. Overall, the article positions Canúint.ie as practical digital infrastructure for Irish dialectology, offering a scalable model for integrating dispersed audio archives into a single, research-ready platform.
