Abstract
This essay appeared in the exhibition catalogue that was produced to accompany the exhibition Huts at the Dougas Hyde Gallery, Trinity College Dublin in 2005. The essay is based upon a lecture that was given at the Gallery, and provides an account of the abiding sense of controversy that necessarily is attached to Thoreau's Walden.
