Abstract
Aviation is a carbon-intensive industry and there are raising concerns about its contribution to climate change. Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAFs) play a significant role in the decarbonization efforts. The policy makers recognize SAF as one of the four pillars to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. The governance of sustainable aviation fuels is a primary concern of international bodies like the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), International Air Transport Association (IATA), and European Commission. There are a variety of supply-side (e.g., subsidies to SAF producers) and demand-side (e.g., SAF mandates) policy tools that can enhance SAF implementation. This chapter evaluates the main policy options and draws lessons learned for policy makers.
