How to deposit papers
How do I deposit my papers in DORAS?
- Journal articles, conference papers, workshop papers, books and book chapters.
- You have 2 options:
- Self-deposit: you can self-deposit your papers directly on the DORAS website. The step-by-step guidelines are available here . Please print off a copy of these guidelines - this requires a PDF viewer such as Adobe Acrobat Reader.
The Library will check that your papers are copyright compliant before making them public on DORAS.
- Mediated-deposit: if you do not have time to self-deposit your papers then you can send your material to the following email address: doras@dcu.ie. The Library will receive your material and before depositing, will check that it is copyright compliant.
- Research theses - PhDs and Research Masters theses
- Other - if there are other types of research that you think should be included in DORAS please contact us and we will consider these for inclusion.
Who can deposit papers in DORAS?
Staff and postgraduates from the DCU academic community.
What type of material will DORAS accept?
Journal articles, conference papers, books and book chapters, working papers and theses. If there are other types of research that you think should be included in DORAS please contact us and we will consider these for inclusion.
Is there any material DORAS will not accept?
DORAS does not accept article pre-prints or any material containing confidential or commercially sensitive information.
When should I deposit my papers in DORAS?
- Journal articles
- Please deposit these once they have been peer-reviewed and accepted for publication.
- Books and book chapters
- Please deposit these once they have been accepted for publication.
- Conference papers
- Please deposit these once they have been peer-reviewed and accepted for the conference. Please notify us if it is likely that the paper will be published in a journal or book.
What version of my papers can be deposited in DORAS?
- Journal articles (from peer-reviewed journals)
- Please deposit the author-prepared accepted version of the paper. This version should have gone through the peer-review process. Most publishers do NOT allow their copyedited and formatted PDF version to be uploaded to an open access repository so please do not deposit the publisher version of the article.
- Books and book chapters
- Please deposit the author-prepared accepted version of the book/book chapter. Most publishers do NOT allow their copyedited and formatted PDF version to be uploaded to an open access repository so please do not deposit the publisher version of the book/book chapter.
- Conference papers
- Please deposit the author-prepared accepted version of the paper. This version should have gone through the peer-review process. Most publishers do NOT allow their copyedited and formatted PDF version to be uploaded to an open access repository so please do not deposit the publisher version of the paper. Please notify us if it is likely that the paper will be published in a journal or book.
- Theses - PhDs and Research Masters theses

What about copyright - will my publisher allow me participate?
Most publishers will allow authors to deposit an author-prepared copy of their final refereed paper in DORAS. Some publishers will even allow authors to deposit the publisher PDF version. Sometimes publishers may impose restrictions, for example they might ask that you wait 6 months. Publisher policies relating to repositories like DORAS are available at: http://www.sherpa.ac.uk/romeo.php The Library will always check a publisher's policy before making material public on DORAS, and where necessary we will contact publishers directly.
What file formats are accepted?
All formats are accepted, for example, MSWord, PDF, HTML, PostScript, plain text, etc. Image formats, video formats, PowerPoint, Excel, etc. are also accepted.
I am new to DCU - can I deposit papers from my previous employment in DORAS?
Yes, we would be delighted to accept this material, provided that the publisher permits this.
Some of my papers are co-authored with colleagues from other universities/institutions
- can I still deposit these papers in DORAS?
Yes, absolutely.
