The story of 'Murchadh Beag and Murchadh Mar' and its variants has been collected from Gaelic speakers throughout Ireland and Scotland. This is a semi-phonetic Irish version that was collected in the Fews district of South Armagh at the end of the nineteenth century. An orthographical version was subsequently edited by Seosamh Laoide and published in Sgealaidhe Oirghiall (1905). There is discussion of the collector Sean 0 hAnnain (John Hannon) and his methods as well as the editorial methods of Seosamh Laoide. It is felt that a new orthographical version in dialectal spelling is required which is provided alongside the semi-phonetic text. Furthermore there is a discussion of various aspects of the dialect that are evident from the text which are compared with other sources for the dialect, as well as with other sources of Irish dialects.
