Investigating the meaning and experience of quality of life for individuals with problem alcohol use and the adult family members of individuals with problem alcohol use

Scott, Eoghan (2022) Investigating the meaning and experience of quality of life for individuals with problem alcohol use and the adult family members of individuals with problem alcohol use. PhD thesis, Dublin City University.

Abstract
Problem alcohol use (PAU) is a significant societal problem in Ireland and can have a profound negative impact on the Quality of life (QoL) of the individual and their family members. Research on PAU and its impact on QoL is growing, and, while under-researched, researchers now view QoL as a significant variable in evaluating alcohol treatment. This two-phase qualitative study aimed to investigate the meaning and experience of QoL for individuals with PAU and adult family members of individuals with PAU. The study’s objectives were to understand and explore what QoL means to individuals with PAU (Phase one) and families of such individuals (Phase two) and how they experience QoL in their daily lives. Phase one involved a sample of 15 adults who self-identified as having a problem with alcohol, and interviews took place on-site at three community treatment settings. Phase two involved online interviews with ten adults who self-identified as having a family member with an alcohol problem. Data from both phases were analysed using thematic analysis. The following themes were identified in phase one in relation to understanding the meaning and experience of QoL for individuals with PAU: mental health and emotional wellbeing; social connectedness; physical health; altered daily life functioning; and socio-economic factors. The following themes were identified in phase two in relation to understanding the meaning and experience of QoL for adult family members of individuals with PAU: mental health and emotional wellbeing experiences; importance of social connectedness and support; difficulties functioning; the burden of role and responsibility; self and identity issues arising in childhood. This study extends our understanding of the meaning and experience of QoL for individuals with PAU and the family members of individuals with PAU and can inform policy and alcohol treatment and supports for individuals with PAU and their families.
